We Aussies can’t get enough of dual-cab utes. They’re prized not only for their jack-of-all-trades versatility but also for the statement they make – let’s face it; plenty are bought simply because they look tough.
The trouble with most utes on sale in Australia? They’re a bit small – and don’t have enough wheels. If you agree, there’s a solution at hand in the carsales’ classifieds, courtesy of this Mercedes-AMG G63 6x6 conversion.

Those with an intimate knowledge of Mercedes-AMG's back catalogue may be confused by the 2017 model year of this vehicle.
Magna Steyr built around 100 factory G63 6x6s between 2013 and 2015 – but this isn’t one of them.
Instead, this is the work of Australian Expedition Vehicles, who have transformed a standard 2017 Mercedes-AMG G63 into a 6x6 replica using a similar process to that of the factory vehicles.
The third axle is a factory Mercedes housing for six-wheel drive, while the portal axles come from German off-road specialists TiBus.

Remote reservoir shocks are by Bilstein, beadlock wheels by military contractor Hutchinson, and there’s even an onboard tyre-pressure adjustment system like the factory car.
One advantage of using a later model-year G63 is its 5.5-litre twin-turbo eight-cylinder, which produces 420kW versus the factory 6x6’s 400kW (both rated at 760Nm).
This example goes further with a custom ECU tune and an Akrapovic exhaust for even greater outputs.
The extra grunt won’t go astray – the factory 6x6 tipped the scales at over four tonnes, and even with carbon-fibre wheelarches, this one isn’t likely to be much lighter.

It is, however, fully road-legal with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of 4495kg, a gross combined mass (GCM) of 8495kg, and a maximum braked towing capacity of 3500kg.
At the rear, the tray is lined with wood and houses the full-sized spare wheel.
Inside, you’ll find all the carbon trim, diamond-quilted leather and luxury equipment of the standard G63, which retailed for $235,411 (plus on-road costs) when new.

This mighty machine isn’t for everyone – and we’re not sure we’d be too keen on attempting to reverse parallel park it outside your favourite café.
But if you’re after a dual-cab that makes a statement, you won’t find a better candidate.
The NSW-based seller calls it ‘a meticulously engineered masterpiece, reimagined for those who demand the absolute pinnacle of luxury and extreme capability… ready to conquer any challenge, from the urban jungle to the most remote frontiers on Earth.’
It may not be a factory-converted example, but with a rare right-hand-drive G63 6x6 currently for sale in South Africa for the equivalent of $A1.7m, this car represents a significant saving.
