Full details: 2024 Peugeot E-3008 EV set to rival Tesla Model Y

New platform, three powertrains, range up to 700km for Peugeot’s E-3008 electric mid-size SUV

Full details of the 2024 Peugeot E-3008 have been revealed, with the headline news that the French brand’s Tesla Model Y rival will have a range of up to 700km and be capable of being charged in less than 30 minutes.

Already confirmed for release in Australia, but with launch timing still to be finalised, the sleek coupe-style Peugeot E-3008 will go on sale in Europe from February next year, underpinned by the Stellantis group’s all-new EV-specific STLA Medium platform and offered initially in two model grades, Allure and GT.

Three all-electric powertrains will be available.

At the entry level is a front-mounted single-motor variant producing 157kW and 343Nm, drawing energy from a 73kWh battery that will offer a range of 525km. Against the clock, 0-100km/h takes 8.7 seconds.

A long-range version with a more powerful 170kW output and larger 98kWh battery will deliver the headline 700km range and reach 100km/h in 8.9sec, despite the extra weight.

Finally, there’s a dual-motor variant that offers all-wheel drive, pumps out 240kW/509Nm and, using the 73kWh battery, has the same 525km range as the single-motor version. It can hit 100km/h from rest in just 6.4sec.

Charging rates for both batteries is up to 160kW, with a 20-80 per cent charge said to take less than 30 minutes for the biggest battery. A smart-charge feature (for low-cost off-peak charges) and vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability have also been developed.

On the move, three levels of brake regeneration will be available, adjusted via steering wheel paddles and, in the most aggressive setting, coming close to offering a one-pedal driving experience.

Measuring in at 4540mm long, 1890mm wide and standing 1640mm high, the Peugeot E-3008 is 210mm shorter, 88mm narrower but 16mm taller than the Tesla Model Y.

Despite being among the smallest in medium SUV segment, Peugeot says the E-3008 still provides plenty of room for passengers and luggage, with up to 520 litres claimed for the latter.

Dotted around the cabin there are 17 different storage spaces which add a further 34L of stowage space. There’s also cooled storage area under the central arm rest and a wireless charger on the centre console.

The stylish coupe-style SUV is said to be highly aerodynamic, achieving a drag coefficient of just 0.28Cd to help maximise the driving range. Neat wind-cheating features include the three-claw snout, flush glazing and unusual wheel design.

Inside, there’s a huge 21-inch panoramic screen that is part of Peugeot’s next-generation ‘Panoramic i-Cockpit’ design that integrates the instrument cluster and infotainment screen behind a single curved screen.

Said to provide a ‘floating’ effect, the new i-Cockpit comes with eight customisable ambient colours to alter the mood within the interior.

There’s also fabric-covered surfaces instead of acres of black plastic on the dash.

The new infotainment layout keeps the current i-Toggle touch panel beneath the main screen but introduces 10 configurable icons over two pages that sees users swipe right or left to find them.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, plus the car-maker’s onboard voice-activated assistant. A new app, meanwhile, allows owners to pre-condition the E-3008, activate the climate control remotely, schedule battery charging or check the navigation.

If you’re wondering where the gear shifter is, that’s moved to a small panel lurking to the right of the (left-hand drive) steering wheel.

Other new tech include a cabin air filtration system and a powerful 10-speaker 690W sound system developed by French firm Focal.

Just six colours will be offered: Obsession Blue, Ingaro Blue, Okenite White, Pearl Black, Artense Grey and Titanium Grey.

Differentiating the GT versions, the lower sections of the front and rear bumpers, wheel-arches and door sills will all be painted gloss black.

As part of a big sustainability drive, each car now contains up to 500kg of ‘green’ materials that include new faux leather and fabric trim on the Allure made from 100 per cent sustainable materials.

The base trim also comes with keyless go, a high-definition rear camera, rear parking sensors, LED headlights and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The GT gets the black detailing mentioned earlier, 20-inch alloy wheels, pixel LED lights, front parking sensors, a power tailgate, wireless phone charging, heated seats/steering wheel and the option of massaging seats.

As standard there’s also semi-autonomous cruise control, lane keep assist, lane change assist, AEB that works from 7-140km/h, long-range blind spot warning and lane departure correction.

Once launched, Peugeot has confirmed that both a hybrid and plug-in hybrid version of the Peugeot 3008 will also be introduced.

It’s not known if the combustion-powered French SUV will share looks, but it will be based on a different platform.
