GAC tests Aussie waters with S7 hybrid and Hyptec HT EV

With big plans for future expansion, Australia’s newest car brand is already thinking ahead to potential new products to add to its repertoire, including a 4.8m long five-seat hybrid and a gullwing-doored electric EV coupe

The News

After three years of groundwork, Australia’s newest Chinese megabrand GAC is planning a measured product rollout over the next three years. Australia got its first taste of GAC’s lineup at the brand’s Sydney launch, with the S7 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV and Hyptec HT electric coupe taking centre stage.

The Key Details

  • GAC gauging interest in large SUV and gullwing-doored EV coupe
  • S7 PHEV drivetrain could offer 200-plus kilometres of EV-only range
  • Hyptec HT features gullwing rear doors in a Tesla-like style
  • No decisions made yet, but S7 is firming

The Finer Details

The S7 – produced under GAC’s Trumpchi brand in China – is a 4.8-metre long five-seat SUV with a stretched wheelbase, which makes for an enormous amount of space in the second row.

The GAC Trumpchi S7 PHEV combines a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine with electric motors for up to 205km of pure electric (EV) driving, setting a benchmark for plug-in hybrid SUVs – even though it’s currently only built in left-hand drive for overseas markets.

The S7 is firmly on GAC’s radar for an Australian release, and discussions are underway to refine key features – including towing performance.

The Hyptec HT’s biggest party trick is its gullwing rear doors, which swing up and out to reveal a cavernous second row.

The coupe-styled crossover features a rear axle-mounted electric motor (180kW/355Nm), with a claimed electric range of 600km.

The Road Ahead

While neither car is confirmed for Australia, GAC’s president Wei Haigang indicated to carsales, that the S7 is of particular interest to the local arm of the company, noting “opportunities” in the medium and large SUV categories.
