New Toyota GR 86 concepts revealed

Toyota's high-performance division showcases future enhancements for new rear-drive coupe

Gazoo Racing has released a range of new high-performance parts for the latest Toyota GR 86 that dials-up the visual aggression and should boost both its abilities on road and track.

Two concepts have been unveiled – one that looks like it maximises downforce and a second, more subtle package of upgrades for fast road use.

Beginning with the first, Toyota's official high-performance arm has added a front bumper with an extended splitter and striking front blades that aim to maximise downforce over the front axle.

A new inlet duct has also been introduced that's claimed to create a ram intake for the engine.

Further extractors on wider front wheel-arches are also vent turbulent air, reducing lift over the front axle.

With the 43mm-wider arches, engineers have broadened the track for more mid-corner grip and also accommodate a set of larger 19-inch rims.

Along the bottom of the doors new side skirts have also been introduced that manage air flow around the body.

At the rear, there's a big motorsport-inspired wing and a diffuser that sprouts wild winglets for improved efficiency over the standard car's stock item.

No claims have been made on how much extra downforce is developed with the Gazoo add-ons.

Finally, peeking through the diffuser is a new sports exhaust.

The second Gazoo GR 86 concept, meanwhile, is claimed to be a more restrained approach to boosting the rear-drive coupe's performance.

It features another new front bumper, different side skirts and a redesigned rear bumper that all combine to improve aero performance. There's also a ducktail lip instead of large rear wing.

Beneath the skin, a new sports exhaust has also been added, plus an upgraded coil-over suspension. The show car also features larger brakes.

Inside, the cosmetic revisions include a forged carbon-fibre finish on everything from the dash to the start button.
