Geely Automotive has formally announced its return to the Australian market and will re-establish itself here in the first half of 2025 with the local release of the EX5 medium SUV.
The Chinese auto giant has been eying and discussing a return to Australia for well over 18 months now and is one of more than a dozen Chinese marques heading Down Under in the near future, nearly all of them primed to offer an electric SUV of some sort.
Known as the Galaxy E5 overseas, the 2025 Geely EX5 will be met with some stiff local competition in the form of the Tesla Model Y and BYD Atto3, not to mention the Kia EV5, Leapmotor C10 and more expensive offerings like the Toyota bZ4X/Subaru Solterra twins.
Chinese versions of the EX5 are powered by a 160kW/320Nm 11-in-1 electric drive motor and the choice of a 49.5kWh or 60.2kWh Aegis short-blade lithium-ion battery pack which yield claimed ranges of 440km and 530km respectively.
Zero-100km/h takes 6.9 seconds across the board.
The whole package rides on a derivation of Geely’s SEA electric architecture dubbed GEA and measures 4615mm long, 1901mm wide, 1605mm tall and 2750mm between the axles.
Headline equipment meantime includes Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities, a 15.4-inch floating central control screen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument panel, head-up display and a 16-speaker stereo system.
“Designed to be a leading competitor in its segment in Australian EV market, the EX5 stands out with more space, superior driving dynamics, and an enhanced ride experience,” Geely said in a statement.
“Australian consumers can look forward to experiencing the blend of advanced technology, innovative design, and unparalleled comfort that the EX5 has to offer.”
Pricing starts from the equivalent $24,280 in China, however local pricing and spec details won’t be announced until closer to the EX5’s release next year.
Word is Geely Auto Australia will detail the rest of its initial product plan in early 2025, which will more than likely be headlined by the Riddara RD6 electric pick-up truck.
