Geely’s Australian expansion appears to be moving faster than expected, with strong hints that next new car joining the EX5 in local showrooms will be a Toyota RAV4-fighting plug-in hybrid SUV.
And given how sharply priced the just-launched Geely EX5 electric SUV is - $41k - it could attract the attentions of new car buyers.
During a presentation at Geely's Australian launch event, a teaser video showcased six vehicles covered in black cloth, revealing only the just-launched EX5… and one additional vehicle that closely resembles the Geely Galaxy Starship 7.
The Geely Galaxy Starship 7 was revealed in late 2024 in China, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) mid-size SUV from Geely’s premium 'Galaxy' sub-brand, boasting an claimed range of 1400km.
If – or perhaps when – it's confirmed for Australia, it would expand Geely’s SUV line-up with a larger, more premium design to compete against the likes of the BYD Sealion 6 and 7, plus the Tesla Model Y, Xpeng G6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
The Geely Galaxy Starship 7 is expected to feature Geely’s latest AI-assisted driving technology, an ultra-efficient electric powertrain backed up by 19kWh battery pack and a 1.5-litre non-turbo petrol engine.
Inside it features a luxury-focused cabin and given Geely’s commitment to local suspension calibration – evidenced by the EX5’s tuning for Australian roads – it’s likely the Starship 7 will receive similar treatment.
Geely has already announced it expects to have 100+ bricks and mortar dealerships across Australia and New Zealand, solidifying its position as a major new player in local markets.
The addition of another model so soon after the EX5 launch suggests that Geely is accelerating its push to compete in the premium electrified vehicle segment, with a strong focus on plug-in hybrid technology.
While the company has yet to confirm official details about the Starship 7, the teaser suggests an announcement wlll be forthcoming.
And if Geely continues its aggressive pricing strategy, the new model could present a compelling alternative to existing hybrid SUVs in Australia, and could even sway Toyota RAV4 buyers – a vehicle widely expected to be the best-selling vehicle in 2025 as the ute market fills up with new contenders like the Shark 6.
Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
