General Motors eyeing zero emission cars

Fuel cell car set for day-to-day testing

General Motors has presented its latest fuel cell technology vehicle, the HydroGen4, which is a European version of the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell, marking a significant improvement on the predecessor model.

"The HydroGen4 features considerable progress in everyday usability, dynamics and system durability compared to its predecessor," Carl-Peter Forster, president of GM Europe, told reporters.

HydroGen4 is equipped with a fuel cell stack that consists of 440 series-connected cells. Fuel cells convert chemical energy into electrical energy without combustion through the process of electro-chemical reaction, which combines hydrogen and oxygen to form water and produce electricity as well.

The power line produces 93kW of electrical output, combined with the 73kW/100hp coming from an electric motor. This powertrain package allows the GM HydroGen4 to sprint from zero to 100km/h in about 12 seconds with an electronically limited maximum speed of approximately 160km/h.

From the middle of 2008, 10 HydroGen4 vehicles will be taking part in a day-to-day test as part of a clean energy project with different drivers testing the cars under different conditions.
