General Motors wants ChatGPT in all its cars

US car giant says artificial intelligence-powered chatbot is next step in voice control evolution

General Motors is planning to leverage its partnership with Microsoft and steal a march on its opposition by fitting ChatGPT across its stable.

In an interview with news agency Reuters, GM vice-president of software-defined vehicles and operating systems Scott Miller said the car-maker must act now to ensure it is not left behind in the rush to embrace artificial intelligence.

“ChatGPT is going to be in everything,” he said.

According to Miller, the AI-driven chatbot at its most basic will help owners access their car’s manual and provide information on how to use vehicle functions.

The same tech can also be used to open and close the driver’s garage door automatically, or dive into an owner’s calendar and update them if an appointment they’re driving to is cancelled.

Expanding on Miller’s on-board AI aspirations, a GM spokesperson said: “This shift is not just about one single capability like the evolution of voice commands, but instead means that customers can expect their future vehicles to be far more capable and fresh overall when it comes to emerging technologies.”

Further reports suggest GM is already well on the way to incorporating the AI that powers ChatGPT into an advanced virtual personal assistant.

Helping develop the tech is Microsoft, which has already committed a multi-billion-dollar investment into Open AI that created ChatGPT.

Microsoft has already declared it will roll out AI into all its products and use it not only for future infotainment systems but other areas of a vehicle, like monitoring and controlling battery performance as well as developing ever-more sophisticated driver assist safety technology.

GM and Microsoft already have an existing partnership forged in 2021 to develop driverless vehicles.

It’s not known if the huge Open AI investment will feed back into that project to help fast-forward the technology’s development.
