Genesis Electrified GV70: Aussie details revealed

Battery-electric version of Genesis GV70 to reach showrooms in July, priced from circa-$105,000

First local details of the incoming 2022 Genesis Electrified GV70 have been revealed, with the new battery-electric mid-size luxury SUV arriving in July as a single high-spec, dual-motor model.

Pricing is still to be announced, but Genesis Australia has confirmed that the all-electric GV70 will have a price range of between $105,000 and $115,000 before on-road costs are added.

That will make it at least $20,000 pricier than the 2022 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport AWD petrol (from $83,276) on which it’s based, however the EV version should still undercut key rivals such as the BMW iX3 (from $114,900) and Mercedes-Benz EQC (from $124,300).

It’s also one of three all-electric models to join the South Korean luxury brand’s Aussie range during the third quarter of this year, with the smaller 2022 Genesis GV60 SUV and the Genesis Electrified G80 sedan also entering the fray.

You can read our review of the new 2022 Genesis Electrified GV70 here – based on an early pre-production prototype model – but key details include standard fitment of a dual-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain that uses two 180kW electric motors (one at each axle) that produce combined outputs of 360kW and 605Nm.

Peak torque can be lifted to 700Nm using a Boost mode feature, which can send the GV70 EV from 0-100km/h in a claimed 4.2 seconds.

The performance boost is only available for 10-second periods and when the battery charge is at a minimum 20 per cent. It’s activated by a button on the steering wheel.

The electric GV70 is based on a modified version of the platform underpinning combustion-engined models – not the Hyundai Group’s dedicated E-GMP platform – however it still uses an 800V architecture as found on the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6.

That enables rapid charging of its 77.4kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery up to 350kW, with Genesis claiming the SUV can top-up from 10 to 80 per cent in less than 20 minutes at a fast-charging station.

A driving range of more than 450km is promised by the car-maker, however official figures are still to be released.

Multi-stage regenerative braking (including i-pedal) is provided, while a vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging function enables household items, laptops, camping gear and the like to be charged up.

Full local specs will be released closer to launch, but standard features are set to include a driver’s Ergo motion (massage) seat, 16-speaker Lexicon audio system, panoramic sunroof with electric sun shade, heated and ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, and a full suite of safety and driver assistance aids.

Most of the EV’s tech – and interior appointments – are borrowed from the regular GV70, including a 14.5-inch central touch-screen with smartphone mirroring, 3D maps and live traffic updates.

Exterior updates for the EV extend to an enclosed Crest grille and a unique 20-inch alloy wheel design.

Despite its platform modifications, Genesis says boot capacity remains at 542 litres.
