Genesis has shown-off its all-new World Endurance Championship (WEC) racer, the GMR-001 Hyper, ahead of its competitive debut in 2026.
Debuted overnight, the Genesis GMR-001 Hyper will compete in the WEC as of 2026 and the IMSA GTP program in 2027 with the ultimate goal of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright.
The GMR-001 has been developed under the rules governing the FIA LMDh category and will compete under the new Genesis Magma Racing name with a chassis supplied by Oreca and a hybrid system made by Bosch, WAE and Xtrac – all standard components used to keep costs fixed and racing close.
Genesis is yet to announce which combustion engine it will use but is hotly tipped to favour a twin-turbocharged V6 like the ones uses by Alpine, Ferrari, Peugeot and Toyota, not to mention teased via the 1149kW X Gran Racer Vision Gran Turismo Concept.
BMW, Cadillac and Porsche meanwhile all run V8s while Aston Martin will use a V12 in its future flagship hypercar racer.
The GMR-001 Hyper abides by Genesis’ Athletic Elegance design language with the parallel LED lighting signature and trademark front-to-rear parabolic line that, in this instance, is said to be used as a unique aerodynamic feature to channel air to the rear diffuser.
Recently crowned WEC champion and three-time Le Mans winner Andre Lotterer will pilot the GMR-001 alongside current Cadillac racer Pipo Derani as Genesis Magma Racing targets a two-car line-up for its inaugural WEC and IMSA campaigns.
“This entry into motorsport is a natural evolution for Genesis,” Genesis chief creative officer Luc Donckerwolke said.
“As we look to push the boundaries of our brand, motorsport allows us to bring the spirit of hyperspeed – which drives how we create and innovate – in a way that aligns perfectly with our core values: audacious, progressive, and distinctly Korean.”
