Genesis won't be Tiburon

Hyundai has lifted the wraps off the Concept Genesis Coupe at the LA Motor show. It's a sharp-looking car with some Tiburon cues and a touch of Celica around the doors and sills. Hyundai says the car has been benchmarked against the previous generation of BMW M3 (the E46 platform).

Genesis, as a production model, will be previewed at the New York Motor Show in March of next year -- which suggests it's a possibility for Melbourne also.

The production version of the car is expected to go on sale with four-cylinder turbo and 3.8-litre V6 powerplants. The latter is a DOHC engine with variable valve timing and Hyundai expects the production version with this engine should hit 100km/h from a standing start in under six seconds.

Brembo brakes and a limited slip differential will be fitted as standard to the 300HP V6 model, which rides on 20-inch alloys and 35 series Z-rated tyres (235mm at the front, 275mm at the rear).

With the unveiling of the concept, Hyundai has confirmed that this will not be the replacement for the Tiburon, contrary to earlier reports (more here). Tiburon will continue in FWD form and will be replaced ultimately with another FWD design.
