The interior of the Genesis X Speedium Coupe has been revealed at California’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance – four months after the sleek electric concept car’s exterior reveal at the New York motor show.
Like all new Genesis vehicles, the X Speedium Coupe’s cabin has been designed in accordance with the ‘Beauty of White Space’ principal, which the Korean luxury brand says places emphasis on minimalism and elegance.
Would-be drivers are greeted by a sea of ‘Monterey Gold’ and ‘Pinegrove Green’ leather as they clamber into the low-set sports seats and are presented with a two-spoke D-shaped steering wheel and a curved digital instrument cluster.
Separating them from the passenger is a floating centre console adorned with little more than the spherical gear selector, which itself is partially obscured by a raised trim element encapsulating the cockpit.
The floating console is matched on either side by floating door armrests, while the segmented theme continues in the rear with two independent buckets split by a fold-down armrest and speaker.
Observant readers will note the odd positioning of the plentiful speakers and tweeters throughout the cabin; Genesis says it’s “exploring the future of audio experiences through a new sound architecture” in collaboration with Metal Sound Design boss Guk-il Yu.
Being a modern electric concept vehicle – from a brand that will go all-EV by 2025 – the X Speedium’s cabin employs plenty of sustainable and eco-friendly materials including recycled trim, vegetable-tanned leather and ‘grain’ leather made from repurposed plastic.
Unfortunately for anyone hoping to nab themselves a future example of Genesis’ new electric coupe, chief creative officer Luc Donckerwolke has declared the X Speedium Coupe is little more than “an internal design exercise” the brand decided to show publicly.
“It was nothing more than a hard model built on our Athletic Elegance design identity,” he said.
“Given the positive reception it received at the event, we chose to complete the concept and present it to discerning attendees at the Pebble Beach Concours.
“The interior captures the Genesis brand’s ‘Beauty of White Space’ design ethos, which suits various luxury lifestyles and adds to the appeal of the dynamic GT.”
There is some hope, however. Genesis trademarked the ‘X Speedium Coupe’ nameplate with IP Australia earlier this year, which suggests to us there are at least some plans for a Genesis-branded coupe in the near to mid-term future, especially given the marque’s pending EV onslaught from 2023.
A mid-size or large electric coupe would be a logical halo model for Genesis, which has just entered the premium EV market with its Genesis GV60 dedicated electric SUV, given it’s now an established player in four of the key premium segments – medium and large sedan, medium and large SUV.
