Aston Martin has used the Geneva motor show to unveil the Martin Vanquish concept that will see the brand challenge the mid-engine supercar establishment for the first time when it goes into production in 2022.
Revealed alongside a concept for a Lagonda All-Terrain SUV and the wild AM-RB 003 hypercar, the Vanquish's major point of difference is it has been created to be an unlimited series production car.
Created to go head-to-head with the new Ferrari F8 Tributo and the current McLaren 720S, the Aston Martin Vanquish is set to be priced from £250,000 ($A450,000) when it arrives in three years' time.
The Vanquish might have borrowed its name from a previous Aston model, but it's all-new from the ground up, having been in development for more than two years.
Codenamed AM9, the new Vanquish is said to be powered by an all-new electrified 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6.
The same engine will be used in the AM-RB 003, but in this application will need to churn out 600kW-plus to be competitive.
Instead of being based around a carbon-fibre monocoque like the AM-RB 003, the Vanquish will sit on a new bonded aluminium mid-engine architecture that harnesses know how accrued from both the Valkyrie and the development of the DB11.
The styling, meanwhile, is thought to benefit from pioneering work done on both the Valkyrie and newer AM-RB 003. According to the Aston Design boss Marek Reichman, the car revealed at Geneva is 85 per cent representative of the car it will launch in 2022.
Like the two new Aston hypercars, key to unlocking the performance of the Vanquish is the downforce created beneath the car.
Speaking following its unveiling, Aston Martin boss Andy Palmer said: "The Vanquish Vision Concept marks another pivotal moment in Aston Martin’s history, and another critical step in delivering the Second Century Plan.
"Our first series production rear mid-engined supercar will be a transformational moment for the brand, for it is the car that will propel Aston Martin into a sector of the market traditionally seen as the heartland of luxury sports cars.”
