It seems almost sacrilegious to tamper with the sublime proportions of Alfa Romeo’s 8C, but that hasn’t deterred Italy’s Carrozzeria Touring from having a crack at creating a rebodied version of the stunning coupe.
The Disco Volante concept pictured alongside pays tribute to the 1952 Alfa Romeo C52 Disco Volante and makes its debut at this week’s Geneva motor show.??
Its makers claim the flying-saucer-like two-seater will be built and sold in limited numbers, with would-be buyers needing to first purchase the 8C donor car. Carrozzeria Touring then needs six months to convert it into the offbeat looking car you see here.??
Part of the reason it takes so long is that the voluptuous aluminium panels are handbeaten into shape by Touring’s craftsmen. Complementing the curvy bodywork is a smattering of black carbonfibre bits, and rounding off the look (literally) are classic telephone-dial rims.??
Perhaps the most distinctive styling element is the boat-tail-like rear window, while the face is adorned by slit-like headlights. ??Meanwhile, the long-snout/short-tail proportions signal the Disco’s classic front-engine/rear-drive layout. The powerplant in question is the standard 331kW/371Nm 4.7-litre V8, arguably one of the best-sounding engines on the planet.??
No word on how much the conversion costs (and that’s after you buy the pricey donor car), but the Disco Volante could find an audience among collectors, sheikhs, Italophiles and so on...
