BMW will introduce a new 'iPerformance' model designation for plug-in hybrid models (PHEV) from July this year.
Created to demonstrate the technology transfer between BMW's i technology and the 'core brand', iPerformance will make its debut on flagship 7 Series PHEV variants.
Said to utilise i's "expertise regarding electric motors, battery cells and electronic control systems", the iPerformance vehicles will be identified by a specific 'i' logo on the front side panel as well as i-style blue highlights to the grille and road wheels.
An eDrive logo will also feature on the c-pillars.
Purchasers will also have access to a range of BMW i 360° ELECTRIC products and services including the i Wallbox home charging system, BMW i Remote app and updated ConnectedDrive services.
Yet to be confirmed for Australia, the global plug-in 7 Series range currently includes the 740e iPerformance, long-wheelbase 740Le iPerformance and all-wheel drive 740Le xDrive iPerformance.
All are powered by a hybrid-equipped 190kW/400Nm version of BMW's familiar 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. A 9.8kWh lithium-ion battery supplies the 70kW/250Nm electric motor.
This all translates to 240kW combined, up to 40km range on pure electric power (with speeds of up to 120km/h attainable), claimed fuel consumption of 2.1L/100km and 49g/km CO2. Charging can be completed in under three hours, or 'less than four' if using a 230V home socket.
The 7 Series hybrids join an ever-expanding list of PHEVs offered globally by the Bavarian brand, with a plug-in 2 Series Active Tourer (not available in Australia), 3 Series, X5 and i8 already on offer.
