A powerhouse variant to cap the Q50 range is yet to be confirmed for production, but Infiniti is treading a well-worn path on the way to market.
The company brought the Q50 Eau Rouge concept to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit back in January, but released no technical information whatsoever about the car. Now, in Geneva, the company has divulged the major specifications for the concept car, which is making its first European appearance this week. The fact the car is powered by a high-performance V6 is not exactly news, given the company recently released a teaser video with the engine at full cry featured on the soundtrack.
However, what wasn't known until the Geneva show was that the concept car is all-wheel drive. And that twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6 develops 568hp (424kW) and 600Nm, pumped out through a seven-speed transmission to the four wheels, with the full-time final drive system splitting the torque 50:50, front to rear.
"Building on the extremely positive feedback on the Q50 Eau Rouge at its recent Detroit Auto Show launch, we decided to further whet the appetite of performance sports saloon fans by engineering this powerful heart into our blood-red beast,” said Johan de Nysschen, Infiniti's president.
“A car with such pronounced styling treatments demands the very best in terms of high-performance powertrains, which is why we installed this V6 twin-turbocharged, seven-speed combination as an example of what a potential powertrain for the Q50 Eau Rouge may look and sound like.”
The Eau Rouge concept is claimed to be able to reach 60MPH in less than four seconds, so allow a fraction longer for 0-100km/h.
Also on the stand in Geneva was a Q50 with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder aimed primarily at European markets. The frugal engine will go on sale in China first, within a few months, followed by European markets later in the year. Infiniti plans to introduce the new entry-level Q50 to other markets as well – possibly including Australia – before year's end.
