GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Hyundai i-oniq concept
Hyundai teases its i-oniq concept for the second time, revealing a clever range-extanded hybrid drivetrainFollowing an image it teased earlier this year, Hyundai has now revealed a second picture of its upcoming i-oniq concept car.
The vehicle is said to impress the latest interpretation of the South Korean company’s “fluidic sculpture” design language. It will also be used to showcase Hyundai’s future drivetrain thinking, the electrically powered vehicle assisted by a range-extending petrol engine – similar in function to that of the Chevrolet Volt.
Powered by an 80kW electric motor, fed by a lithium-ion battery, i-oniq can travel up to 120km on a single charge. When bolstered by its 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, the car can travel up to 700km. Hyundai claims a CO2 emissions figure of just 45g/km.
In size, i-oniq is slightly smaller than a BMW 3 Series. Its “dynamic proportions” said to create an “aesthetic and functional” body shape. The four-seat cabin is housed inside what i-oniq’s designers call a “penthouse roof”, its lounge-style seating and elegant décor inspired by musical instruments, Hyundai says.
The Hyundai i-oniq concept car will be unveiled in full at the Geneva Motor Show later this week.
