GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Hyundai PassoCorto concept
It's a mid-engined twin-turbo Hyundai... Designed in Italy for well-connected Gen Y sports car buyersHyundai has unveiled a new light-weight, mid-engined sports car concept to be shown at next week’s 2014 Geneva motor show.
Dubbed the PassoCorto, the two-seat sporty is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol four-cylinder twin-turbo engine that’s claimed to develop 199kW. No speculative performance figures have been mooted, nor has a predicted kerb weight.
Displaying an aggressive front end with a deep aerodynamic air splitter and slim-line LED headlights, the PassoCorto is according to the company: "a fascinating glimpse at what a mid-engined, lightweight Hyundai sports car might look like in the future".
There's a clear Italian influence to the design, not to mention a number of radical styling decisions, such as the inboard exhaust pipes and the 'vestigial tail' that protrudes from the rear.
It is the second concept car Hyundai has announced for the Geneva motor show, and will be displayed alongside the Intrado prototype crossover.
Designed in co-operation with Pininfarina's lead designer, Luca Borgogno, a team of students from the Instituto Europeo di Design and the Hyundai Design Centre Europe, the sporty coupe is the tenth concept car to result from the Turin-based Transportation Design course.
In total, 16 students worked under the watchful eye of Borgogno, their proviso being to create a car that would appeal to a young, tech-savvy demographic, namely generation Y.
The budding young designers submitted designs and the best two were chosen, and then "merged" according to Hyundai.
The result is the Hyundai PassoCorto, whose name roughly translates to ‘short wheelbase’.
Measuring 4100mm overall, the PassoCorto is about 100mm shorter than a Toyota 86. Given its likely mass and mid-mounted mechanicals, it has the potential to be a very dextrous sports car and a brand icon. That said, at this time, Hyundai has made no comment on the concept car's potential production future.
