GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Jeep Wrangler goes black

Black Edition II version of Wrangler emerges; could reach Oz before all-new Jeep off-roader emerges in 2017

Jeep has revealed its Geneva show star and its special-edition Wrangler Black Edition II that could become available in Australia.

Due to make its world debut on March 3, the black-themed Wrangler is based on Europe's top-shelf Wrangler Sahara and goes on sale there around mid-year.

A Fiat Chrysler Australia spokesperson told motoring.com.au it's "too early to say" whether the limited-edition Wrangler will be here, where Jeep recently released the Wrangler Blackhawk.

New features include black grille inserts, black headlight surrounds, black 18-inch alloy wheels, black badging, a black wheel cover and a black Mopar fuel cap.

Inside, there is black leather seat trim, polished black accents and a Uconnect infotainment system with navigation, plus a special accessory package comprising a mult-ifunctional tool, cargo bag and Jeep Owners Group sticker.

Offered in Europe in 'Dual Top' form including both soft-top and three-piece hard-top roofs, the Black Edition II will be available with 147kW/460Nm 2.8-litre turbo-diesel and 208kW/347Nm 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engines, matched only with a five-speed automatic transmission.

As we've reported, Jeep will release its first all-new Wrangler in almost two decades in 2017, when it's expected to appear on a new hydro-formed steel chassis with lightweight aluminium bodywork.
