GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Koenigsegg to top Bugatti for power
Swedish car maker says production version of 400km/h Regera direct-drive supercar will now get 1119kW, will be 50kg lighterKoenigsegg has used the Geneva Motor Show to reveal the production version of its Regara hypercar. And in the process it has taken a fair swipe at Bugatti's new-generation Chiron hypercar .
Not content to be powered by a measly 820kW twin turbo V8, the production Regera also gets two electric motors producing a combined 520kW. Total output for the Swedish hypercar is claimed to be 1119kW and 2000Nm. In comparison, the new Bugatti is pegged at 1103kW and 1600Nm.
That should get the Regera driver's attention! Indeed, the Swedish nuttercar-maker's founder, Christian von Koenigsegg, says Regera is able to spin up its wheels, in the dry (with ESP-off), at speeds all the way up to 280km/h!
von Koenigsegg also claims the production Regera has received "up to 3000 different changes" since it was revealed in concept car form at last year's Geneva motor show. In the process kerb weight has been reduced to 1590kg.
The biggest change, says the founder, was "a giant leap forward in brake regeneration and battery technology" which meant smaller 4.5kWh lithium ion cells could be used, cutting weight, complexity and solving packaging issues.
Instead of a conventional dual-clutch automatic or even a manual transmission, the Regera channels all of its immense power to just the rear wheels using what it calls a direct drive gearbox.
For a bit of theatre, Regera is claimed to be "the first car in the world that operates all body closures completely automatically.
"The spectacle to open and close the entire car simultaneously from the remote or smartphone, truly turns the Regera into a transformer," says its maker.
The Swedish manufacturer also released performance figures for the hybrid at the show.
Against the clock, the Regera is claimed to knock over 0-100km/h in just 2.8sec, reach 200km/h from standstill in an astonishing 6.6sec and top out at 400km/h. Bugatti's claims for the all-wheel drive Chiron are respectively 2.5 and 6.5sec, and 420km/h (380km/h with its 'drivability' wing extended).
Koenigsegg says it plans to make just 80 Regeras over five years priced at around $3.1m. By the end of the Geneva show's media and VIP days tomorrow it expects more than half will be sold.
