GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Nissan to show off wireless charging tech

Japanese car-maker teases its Fuel Station of the Future concept that uses a charging plate embedded in the road

Nissan has announced it will unveil a powerful, next-generation wireless charging system at the 2016 Geneva motor show next March.

The new device, called the Fuel Station of the Future, uses a charging plate embedded in the road’s surface that charges by induction.

Wireless charging is nothing new -- both BMW and Mercedes-Benz have both teamed up to create their own wireless charging pads for home charging -- but the Nissan system promises to cut the lengthy charging times previous wireless charging points have suffered from.

It’s not known how the new tech advances this type of induction charging but last month the Japanese car-maker showed off a 7kW wireless charging device that was capable of charging even a powerful next-generation 60kW battery overnight.

The bigger, more powerful 60kW battery is set to power the next Nissan LEAF and give it a range of 500km.
