Opel plans to unveil its latest show car, the Astra OPC EXTREME, in Geneva next month.
As the name suggests, the design study is based on the Astra OPC Cup car, which campaigns in the Nürburgring Endurance Championship (VLN). Track-ready features for the show car include a six-point racing harness and sports seats in a lightened shell replete with carbon-fibre components.
Opel has said nothing about further modifications to the Astra OPC EXTREME, and even implies that the car will remain powered by the standard 280hp engine from the road car, relying on low kerb mass for its potent performance. But as we wrote last year, while Opel was still selling cars in Australia, peak power for the car is likely to be decided by the machinations of competitors. Volkswagen's Golf R has just been revealed to the press and offers 221kW (300hp), so the Opel can be expected to at least match that. It's not the first time Opel has debuted a show car based on a race contender; the Astra OPC E-Treme concept of 2002 was a forebear of the new Astra, but the 2014 car will go into very low-volume production.
Opel expects the lucky owners to enter the car in the occasional track competition, and the iconic Nurburgring, which is open to amateur racers all year round, provided the inspiration for the Astra OPC EXTREME.
But sadly – and obviously – it won't be coming to Australia as an Opel.
