GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Rimac Concept_S electric supercar unveiled

Croatian creation signals new EV supercar era with monstrous 365km/h machine

You've probably never before heard of Rimac, a niche supercar start-up headquartered in Zagreb, Croatia. But with a pair of monstrous quad-motor EV exotics that have all-but sold out, and plans for more madness to come, it's a name that could one day rival the likes of Swedish star Koenigsegg.

Rimac has developed a unique electric vehicle (EV) architecture that underpins its supercars, starting with the Concept_One, priced at an eye-watering €850,000, or $A1.25 million.

Powered by a liquid-cooled 82kWh Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide (LiNiMnCoO2) battery pack, the supercar has a 330km range. That may be 100km less range than a Tesla Model S but it's significantly quicker, accelerating from 0-100km/h in a blistering 2.6 seconds.

Top speed for the 1850kg vehicle is a mind-melting 355km/h.

All this performance is possible thanks to the car's incredible 800kW and 1600Nm output, which is tamed via large 390mm front ceramic brake discs worked by big six-piston calipers, the rears 380mm discs and four-pot calipers.

The Croatian car maker fronted up to the Geneva motor show for the production vehicles' global premiere and Kresimir Coric, Rimac's head of sales, told motoring.com.au "We didn't expect so much love."

The car's innards are covered by carbon-fibre body work and despite the car's aggressive design he said the interiors are what really make people's jaws drop.

Originally the car was going to feature a hand-print recognition panel on the side window to unlock the doors but due to homologation issues Rimac had to can it. Instead there's a touch button hidden underneath the mirror that activates the door.

But if the Rimac Concept_One isn't quite exclusive or fast enough, there's the Concept_S, the "evil brother" according to Coric.

The Rimac Concept_S pumps out a tyre-shredding 1100kW and 1800Nm and with a more aggressive aero package and an all-wheel torque vectoring system, it sprints from rest to 100km/h in 2.5 seconds.

Perhaps more impressive is the car's 0-200km/h sprint that takes just 5.6 seconds. And the 0-300 km/h dash? Just 13.1 seconds.

Top speed is 365km/h.

Only two of these monsters will be built, and both are sold said Coric, who explained that each vehicle is assembled entirely in-house at Rimac's production facility near Zagreb.

"Only the wheels are built outside the factory," he said. "It takes 12 months to make one car. Eight of the Concept_One and two of the Concept_S will be built."

Four Concept_One models remain available and customers are "hand-picked" said Coric, but hinted more vehicles will be built as demand increases.

"We have plans for more," he explains and notes that "we're passionate about racing too."

Could the company be looking for a way to showcase its EV tech to a wider audience via motorsport?

The ambitious company is already considering how to expand its portfolio of vehicles, with Coric admitting "We already have plans for our next model".

Just don't expect an SUV!
