GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: SsangYong teases new X-TRAIL rival

New SUV said to have been inspired by the 1990 Korando; likely to have seven seats and could be on sale by 2020

SsangYong has teased a new mid-size SUV it plans to reveal at the forthcoming Geneva motor show next month.

The new concept, called the eXciting Authentic Vehicle Long (XAVL), has been created to go up against seven-seat SUVs like the Nissan X-TRAIL and the recently-launched Skoda Kodiaq.

Claimed to have been inspired by the SsangYong's second-generation Korando sold during the 1990s, from the teasing pics the concept appears to come with that car's pronounced angular wheel-arches and pinched front snout.

The concept's design is also an evolution from the 2015 XAV Frankfurt motor show concept.

Inside, SsangYong say the XAVL previews its next-gen infotainment system and cabin design.

Expected to come powered by the both petrol and diesel engines, the new XAVL will sit above the Korando but below the soon-to-be-launched Rexton in the SsangYong line up.

Production is thought to be planned for 2020.
