GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Suzuki's Corolla fighter

Five-door iK-2 hatch concept previews all-new Suzuki rival for top-selling small cars

Suzuki has revealed full details and images of a concept that heralds its first direct rival for top-selling small cars like the Toyota Corolla and Mazda3.

Revealed overnight at the Geneva motor show, the iK-2 show car is an accurate preview of a small five-door hatchback that will go on sale in Europe next year.

Set to slot into the range between the Swift and S-Cross, the iK-2 is based on a new small-car platform and powered by a new 1.0-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine dubbed Boosterjet, details for which remain unavailable.

It rides on a 2520mm wheelbase and measures 4023mm long, making it longer than the Swift (3850mm) but shorter than the S-Cross (4300mm), while a 1450mm height makes it significantly lower than both models.

Although it's labelled a concept, the iK-2's LED headlights and tail-lights and 18-inch wheels and tyres appear to be the only elements unlikely to reach production.

As we reported last week, Suzuki Australia is keen to get its hands on the iK-2 production model Down Under, where it would undercut Australia's two top-selling cars in terms of both size and price.

"The iK-2 is bigger than Celerio and Swift and traditional B-segment cars," said Suzuki Australia General Manager Automobiles Andrew Moore.

"It's about the size the Corolla and Mazda3 used to be and I'm pushing hard for it in Australia."

Motoring.com.au understands the production version of the iK-2 is a key part of Suzuki Australia's target of 30,000 annual sales by 2017.
