German mag outs Lexus racing concept

IS-F racing concept built on a four-year old DTM Vectra platform?

A well known motoring publication has let the cat out of the bag concerning the Lexus IS-F racing concept that went on display at the Tokyo Auto Salon earlier this month.

AutoBild alleges that the car was a modified Lexus body sitting on a donor platform from a 2004 Opel Vectra prepared for the German Touring Car series, DTM.

Even the engine is reportedly an Opel unit.

Irrespective of whether the 'Lextra' is a case of dubious ethics, it definitely is a cracker of a thing in its looks and hints that Lexus is interested in joining some form of touring car racing -- the DTM series being the most likely -- at some point in the future.

AutoBild suggests that if Toyota's F1 campaign doesn't strike gold soon, the company may drop out of the sport and hand over its engines to Lexus for a DTM joust.

Lexus is already participating in motor sport through the SC 430, entered in the Japanese Super GT category of racing.
