Glickenhaus plotting hydrogen-powered SCG Boot pick-up

It ain’t pretty, but SCG 010 Zero version of Baja 1000-winning ute takes 5min to refuel and offers 1600km range

American billionaire Jim Glickenhaus is plotting a pick-up version of his Baja Boot off-road racer that will be powered by a zero-emissions hydrogen fuel-cell electric powertrain.

The full-size truck, which could rival the likes of the Tesla Cybertruck and Ford F-150 Electric, has been developed under the name SCG 010 Zero and shares the racing Boot's looks that only a mother could love.

That means the SCG Zero gets its snub nose, high-set headlights and separate plastic wheel-arches.

Originally created as a purpose-built off-road racing truck to compete in the legendary Baja 1000 – the 1000-mile race held each year along the Baja California Peninsula – the SCG Baja Boot won its class at North America's most dangerous race on its first outing.

Since then, SCG has offered buyers a road-legal version of the same race truck with two- or four-door body styles, but both have been petrol-powered, with the fastest version using a 485kW supercharged 6.2-litre V8.

Last year, in a public spat on Twitter, race team owner Jim Glickenhaus announced he was entering a hydrogen-powered version of his Boot in the 2023 Baja 1000 and challenged Elon Musk to race him with his Cybertruck in a zero-emissions duel.

The revelation a double-cab ute is in consideration confirms SCG is planning to offer customers a production version of the racer.

No pics of the cabin have been posted by the US race team, but it's thought to have gained a few creature comforts over the racer, including seat belts instead of harnesses, softer seats, sound-proofing and an infotainment system.

Set to be powered by a development of the race truck's hydrogen fuel-cell, the headline news is SCG hydrogen tanks take just five minutes to fill from empty and provide an incredible 1600km range.

Like the racer, the SCG Zero will almost certainly have all-wheel drive, with at least one motor mounted on each axle to provide a power output expected to be as much as 746kW.

Giving the SCG 010 Zero an advantage both in the race and on the road is the Baja Boot-derived ute is set to boast a significant advantage over its pure-electric rivals. Its hydrogen fuel-cell set-up requires less batteries which should mean the SCG 010 Zero weighs 100kg less than the Tesla Cybertuck.

There's no word on when or where SCG plans to sell its 010 Zero, but it won't be cheap. The closely related V8 four-door costs from $US287,500 ($A375,000), suggesting a price tag well in excess of $A500,000.
