Road trips make excellent subject matter for movies and books. But a Danish driver by the name of Jan Kalmar is embarked on a road trip of such epic length it could only be compressed into the running time of the three 'Lord of the Rings' movies AND the two 'Hobbit' films combined.
Kalmar, a Porsche instructor in his homeland, has brought together a team of enthusiasts and a Porsche Cayenne to work his way around the world, driving east to west AND north to south. His last loop was Canada (pictured). The Cayenne was shipped back to Britain for a check-over and upgrade before commencing the 46-day voyage for the next leg – Australia.
Joined by Kiwi co-driver Campbell Fraser and British cameraman Will Schryver, Kalmar set out from Sydney on Thursday. By the time you read this the Porsche's 13,600km odyssey around the coast via Highway One should be half complete.
After Australia, the team will sail west, where they will complete a journey from the southern tip of Africa to the northernmost part of Europe – with the aim of setting a new record.
Kalmar and his team are maintaining permanent records of each journey, and you can find out more on the website. Register to comment on this article.
