New reports suggest that General Motors is working on a new twin-turbo six-cylinder engine to rival Ford's 3.5-litre EcoBoost unit. Ford's V6 EcoBoost engine is currently in service in several North American models, such as the Ford Flex and Taurus SHO, and its turbocharged direct-injection technology will be coming to Australia in a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder configuration for the Falcon in 2011.
According to the GM InsideNews blog, the General is developing a 3.0-litre twin turbocharged V6 powerplant that could see the light of day late next year or early 2012. Though specifics are still unknown, the engine could be expected to output more than 250kW of power and 500Nm of torque, and is likely to make its debut under the bonnet of GM's luxury brand Cadillac.
Codenamed LF3, the new engine is not set in stone for production at this stage, merely undergoing research and development, but even the rumour of such an engine is causing plenty of chatter. Such an engine would be a major weapon in the GM arsenal, providing select vehicles like the Chevrolet Camaro and Cadillac CTS with low emission, high output engine applications.
Furthermore, if Holden could get its hands on such an engine, it could ostensibly drop the motor into its Commodore range, giving the Calais and SV6 models even more punch. And the inevitable HSV models (possibly a reborn XU6) would take the fight to FPV F6 models.
