GMC Hummer EV SUV teased

An SUV to match Hummer’s breakthrough EV pick-up is in the works; to be shown in full next week

The all-new, all-electric 2023 GMC Hummer SUV has been teased again ahead of its global reveal next week.

Hitting the road about two years after the pioneering Hummer EV pick-up truck, the SUV will be statically revealed on April 3 – or 4/3/21 in American vernacular – and will lead an all-EV offensive for the storied American marque.

Considering the Edition 1 Hummer EV truck sold out within 10 minutes of its reveal via GMC Hummer’s online reservations system, we’re tipping the matching SUV will be snapped up quickly too.

The latest video teaser reaffirms our earlier report that the SUV will employ the same rugged, square-jawed front-end design as the Hummer dual-cab ute launched last month, completed by an unmistakable Hummer profile and a wagon-style rear with a spare tyre attached to the tailgate.

The news comes after the very first GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 ute – complete with VIN 001 – sold at auction for $A3.79 million at the Barret Jack Auction House in the US.

GM is yet to confirm details of its high-performance electric SUV, but it’s expected to be offered with the same triple-motor set-up – producing a monstrous 745kW and 15,600Nm of torque – as the GMC Hummer Edition 1.

It’s not yet clear whether the Hummer SUV will be sold as a seven-seater, but given the vehicle’s expected 5.5-metre length, it would easily fit three rows.

The SUV is expected to carry the same technical highlights as the pick-up, which means 18 cameras – including underbody off-road units – should be offered, setting it up to be almost unstoppable off-road.

The pick-up also has impressive off-road specs that should be similar in the SUV, including up to 400mm of ground clearance (via ‘extract mode’), a 50-degree approach angle, 38-degree departure angle and 32-degree breakover.

Water fording is up to 800mm in the ute and the Ultium EV architecture features lithium-ion battery tech with extra protection for off-roading.

The pick-up has a 560km driving range and the potent 1000hp (745kW) powertrain can deliver 0-100km/h acceleration in about 3.0 seconds.

The 800V DC fast-charge capability can take up to 350kW, which at full charge speed means owners can rake in roughly 160km after only about 10 minutes of fast-charging.

Pricing for the GMC Hummer EV dual-cab ute starts at $US112,595, or around $A150,000.

It hasn’t yet been confirmed for Australia but certainly can’t be ruled out at this stage – and nor can the upcoming SUV – especially if importer GMSV decides there’s a market for it.

Rivals for the rough-and-ready GMC Hummer EV SUV include the forthcoming 2021 Rivian R1S and 2022 Tesla Cybertruck.
