GWM confirms new twin-turbo V8 engine

As most car brands downsize, GWM Tank is super-sizing with a thunderous new turbo-petrol V8 engine

If you thought the V8 was dying a slow death, think again.

GWM has announced an all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V8 engine has been developed and although vital statistics haven’t been divulged, it’s expected to pump out tyre-shredding levels of power and torque.

That’s because it’s not only a twin-turbo V8, but a plug-in hybrid twin-turbo V8 that’s set to eclipse the brand’s V6 hybrid powertrain’s output of 380kW and 800Nm.

During his keynote speech at the 2025 Shanghai motor show, GWM Tank’s global brand boss Gu Yukun said large displacement engines faced many challenges in export markets but proclaimed: “We solved problems that many overseas car-makers have not.”

Details are thin on the ground at this stage, but it looks certain the new V8 will make its way into various global markets – including Australia – across a number of GWM’s brands, but the off-road brand Tank is likely to be the first cab off the rank, with the Tank 300 Hooke (pictured) nominated as a potential vehicle to get the tub-thumping V8.

This would give GWM Tank a rival for the likes of the V8-powered Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392, a vehicle that was never offered in Australia due to its left-hand drive layout.

At this stage in the game, GWM execs said every Tank model is being considered for the new V8 engine.

The Chinese off-road SUV brand’s head honcho said that advanced software control of the fuel injection system will help it meet emissions regulations in overseas markets, along with several other features, including the fitment of plug-in hybrid module.

The single e-motor is located within the transmission connected to the V8, which was on display at the Shanghai motor show.

“The mechanical charm of the V8 engine is intact and performance will be wild!” beamed Yukun.

GWM has also stated the new twin-turbo V8 powerplant will make its way into various luxury vehicles as well and is likely to be deployed in vehicles like the Tank 500 and Tank 700 in due course.

There’s every chance the stump-pulling V8 donk could find its way into the GWM Cannon Alpha, a vehicle that would give the Ford Ranger Raptor a run for its money.
