The MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde or 'four-leaf clover' signals a return to Alfa Romeo's high performance rootsThe Alfisti will be rejoicing in the streets as the Quadrifoglio Verde (QV) or four-leaf clover badge is back, affixed firmly to the flanks of a high performance MiTo model.
Making its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show and scheduled to arrive in Oz later in 2010, the new Italian hot hatch takes "just over" 7.0secs to accelerate from zero to 100km/h.
Powered by a high output, low emission 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine outputting 125kW, the new Alfa Romeo MiTo QV uses just 4.8 litres of juice per 100 kilometres travelled (on the freeway cycle).
The new engine is the first iteration of Alfa Romeo's new MultiAir range, which promises to deliver high levels of fuel efficiency without unduly affecting performance, and this particular unit will be coupled with a six-speed Italian-made manual gearbox.
Die-hard Alfa fans, or Alfisti to the unitiated, will fondly remember the legendary Quadrifoglio Verde name, which has graced some of Alfa's sportiest cars such as the Quadrifoglio Verde Series 3 Spider.
In addition to the high-spec engine, the MiTo QV benefits from an updated chassis, 17-inch alloy wheels (mimicking the design of 8C Competizione supercar) and an all-black interior finish that "ensures no reflections or distractions while driving". You can only get the car in titanium coloured paint.
Perhaps the most important inclusion to the Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde will be the dynamic suspension system, designed with help from electronics specialist Magneti Marelli.
The system "actively and continuously controls the electronic shock absorbers" says Alfa Romeo, and makes use of four electronically controlled shock absorbers, five accelerometric sensors and a control unit that routes into the cars various systems.
As such, the MiTo QV's dynamic suspension has three settings: normal, all weather, and dynamic, with the latter option increasing stiffness and reducing body roll and pitch for spirited driving.
Expect the Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde to launch in Australia late in 2010.
