Golden Steering Wheel Awards for 2008
Surprise! German marques dominate Germany's best known motoring awardsAudi, BMW and Volkswagen picked up Golden Steering Wheel gongs for the Q5, 1 Series coupe and the new Golf, respectively. The awards are tabulated and bestowed upon deserving new cars by a panel of judges selected by German magazine 'Bild am Sonntag'.
Commended by the technical experts on the jury for its ease of servicing and environmental considerations, Audi's Q5 was judged the best candidate in the 'special category SUVs' section.
BMW's 1 Series coupe topped the 'special category coupe' section of the awards and the Volkswagen Golf led home the field in the 'compact' car section.
In the other categories, a Seat Ibiza won the 'small' section and the Skoda Superb took out the 'middle' car section. Seat -- a Spanish brand -- and Czech brand Skoda are both owned by Volksagen.
Judges praised the Superb for its 'Twin-Door' system and passive safety. The large car will be introduced to the Australian market early next year and has picked up a whole series of prestigious awards such as: the 'Car of the Year 2008' in Latvia, the 'Company Vehicle of the Year 2008' in Germany, the 'Best Company Car' in Croatia and 'Most Beautiful Car' in Poland -- and we're not making this up!
There was one prominent name missing from the Golden Steering Wheel awards ceremony: Mercedes-Benz. But that was OK, because 'Bild am Sonntag' handed over a 'Green Steering Wheel' award to the Stuttgart firm for its BlueTec diesel technology. This award was decided by a readers' poll, followed by final judgement from a panel of experts.
