Volkswagen dabbled with the Golf GT limited edition earlier this year; now it's time for the full-blown 18-hole round robin.
Both the 1.4-litre direct-injection petrol TSI engine and the 2.0-litre TDI (turbodiesel) engine are available in the new Golf GT Sport, which will be an on-going model in the Golf range.
Developing 125kW of power and 240Nm of torque (between 1750 and 4500rpm), the TSI engine relies on both turbocharger and supercharger to provide the right forced induction at any engine speed and still return reasonable fuel economy.
Although the output is commensurate with that of a 2.3-litre naturally aspirated engine, the TSI unit, by displacing just 1.4 litres, uses 20 per cent less fuel.
The TDI engine is the same as that fitted to the upgraded Passat (more here) and just as the TSI engine does, it develops 125kW of power. Peak power occurs at 4200rpm and peak torque of 350Nm is available from 1750 to 2500rpm.
Acceleration for the Golf GT Sport TDI is 8.2 seconds to despatch the 0-100km/h dash.
Unlike the earlier limited edition Golf GT (more here), the GT Sport can be identified by the GTi-like charcoal grille surround. Standard features include 17-inch BBS 'ClassiXs', 225 tyres, bigger brakes, dual exhaust outlets, sports seats and sports steering wheel.
The GT Sport TSI starts the ball rolling at $34,990 and the TDI variant is priced at $37,490. DSG transmission adds $2300 and can be specified with either engine.
