The second-generation MG HS has made its global premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed today and the Chinese brand’s all-new mid-size SUV will arrive Down Under in the fourth quarter of this year.
Aussie details are yet to be announced for MG’s new rival for the top-selling Toyota RAV4, but homologation data has already confirmed the retention of the current model’s familiar 1.5- and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engines, though a new plug-in hybrid version is expected to head our way too.
The new MG HS measures 4636mm long, 1890mm wide and rides on a 2750mm wheelbase, making it 26mm longer overall – with an extra 30mm separating its axles – and 14mm wider, but 30mm lower than its predecessor.
MG says it redesigned the new HS from the ground up for its second generation, but its all-new look draws clear parallels with the new MG3 hatch and it shares its underpinnings and some of its body panels with the Roewe RX5.
“As we all know with kids and babies, boot space is essential,” said MG Motor Australia chief commercial officer Giles Belcher.
“The new HS has plenty of space for the highchair, pram, balance bike, baby seat and luggage when you ditch the daily commute to go for an interstate road trip.”
Belcher went on to reference the HS’ role as a key model for MG both in Australia and abroad, before promising the new model would be a much more compelling offering than before.
“The technology offering has evolved with the HS featuring two prominent 12.3-inch high-definition displays alongside and much more that we’ll be sure to share closer to launch,” he said.
The only other detail confirmed for the Australian market is the new HS will be backed by MG Motor Australia’s generous seven-year/unlimited-km warranty.
Prices are expected to increase at least a couple of grand for the new model – the current version starts from $32,990 drive-away and tops out at $53,690 before options.
