Google patents indicator-aware tech for driverless cars

New technology will help autonomous cars predict other cars' behaviour more easily

Tech giant Google has been caught patenting a clever new piece of technology that will help future autonomous cars recognise when a car is indicating prior to a manoeuvre.

Currently, driverless vehicles only recognise a car is changing lanes when it physically begins moving from one lane to another.

It’s hoped the new patent for the tech, that was filed with the US Patent office back in 2013, will help driverless cars predict and understand human behaviour.

The facility to recognise flashing indicators is one of many filed by Google’s autonomous car division. Recently it filed an invention that also recognises buses and even potholes.

Sadly for Google, the bus-detection system was obviously not operational when one of its driverless Lexus RX vehicles collided with a bus back in February 14.

In the future, it’s hoped, by being able to identify vehicles like buses and indicators, the software will avoid accidents that are obvious to most humans behind the wheel.
