Jeep is using the limited-edition Grand Cherokee SRT Night version to preview the updated MY17 range ahead of a full roll-out at the end of the year.
The SRT Night, which is in Australian showrooms now, features the significant list of functional changes that are included in the upcoming MY17 model, including the adoption of electrically assisted steering, a stop/start function, full speed forward collision warning and a ‘stop’ function for the rear park-assist that works at speeds up to around 10km/h.
The revised Grand Cherokee also gets more aluminium in the suspension to help reduce overall and unsprung weight, as well as, in the upcoming Pentastar V6 version, a slight jump in power output.
Other than a largely invisible fiddle with the front end – light cluster, grille and lower air intake – there are few external changes. There are, however, some functional improvements inside, including a new, “more substantial” shifter for the eight-speed auto transmission and a revised centre stack including Sport and stop/start buttons.
The new electric steering also comes with selectable modes including Sport, Comfort and Normal, and, according to Jeep, combines with the new stop/start function to help bring lower emissions and improved fuel economy.
Teased by Jeep Australia three months ago, the SRT Night is kitted out with lightweight 20-inch black wheels, black leather trim, black external details (grille, lower front fascia, side window frames, badging) and an 825-Watt Harman Kardon 19-speaker sound system. It is tagged at $97,000 – or $7000 above the regular SRT.
When the company says availability is limited, it is serious: Only 120 SRT Night editions will be coming into the country.
In August, Jeep will also be introducing another new model that will preview the MY17 update: a 75th anniversary edition Grand Cherokee using Chrysler’s 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 hooked up to the Quadra-Trac II 4x4 system.
On top of the MY17 changes, the celebrationary GC will gain numerous extra features in its standard kit, including bronze detailing, 75th anniversary badging and the usual premium-spec equipment including Quadra-Lift air suspension and a dual-pane sunroof.
Summit and off-road focused Trailhawk models will also be part of the full MY17 rollout when it happens at the end of the year.
