Greens welcome Rudd's hybrid alternative

Labor leader Kevin Rudd dumps Ford Territory for hybrid

The Australian Greens have welcomed Labor leader Kevin Rudd's decision to purchase a hybrid car.

The Labor leader on Wednesday night said he would replace his Ford Territory four-wheel-drive with a new hybrid car as he outlined new initiatives on geothermal, solar energy and energy efficiency.

"All four Greens senators (Rachel Siewert, Kerry Nettle, Christine Milne and Bob Brown) have hybrid cars and, previously, Senator Brown had LPG-powered cars," Senator Brown said in a statement.

"We welcome Queensland Premier Peter Beattie's plan to charge higher registration fees for gas guzzlers, a move the Greens have advocated for a decade."

Senator Brown said it was important to look at ways in which the government can help poorer people change to more environment-friendly vehicles and boost public transport.

Liberal backbencher Wilson Tuckey says Kevin Rudd's decision to purchase a hybrid car won't help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"I'm very much in favour of renewable energy but I like greenhouse with grunt," Mr Tuckey told reporters in Canberra.

"His decision to buy a Prius won't help the situation, it just means there will be more emissions in Japan and less emissions, maybe, around his front garage.
