GWM Cannon Alpha: Australian pricing and specs

Bigger and more luxurious Chinese dual-cab 4x4 ute now on sale

The 2024 GWM Cannon Alpha will be priced from under $52,000 when the new dual-cab 4x4 ute arrives in Australian showrooms in the coming months.

Three versions of the larger and more luxurious sister model for the existing GWM Ute will be offered from launch with drive-away prices: $51,990 for the Lux, $57,990 for the Ultra and $64,990 for the Ultra Hybrid.

The first two Cannon Alpha variants are powered by a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel outputting 135kW/480Nm, while the Ultra Hybrid scores the 255kW/648Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol/electric hybrid powertrain from the Tank 500.

Fuel consumption for the diesels is rated at 8.9L/100km on the combined cycle, whereas the significantly more powerful hybrid drinks 9.8L/100km and won’t be topped by the petrol V6 offered in China.

Both powertrains drive all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4x4 system.

Maximum braked towing capacity is rated at 3500kg across the board, but payload suffers a bit compared to established rivals, maxxing out at 821kg for the Lux and dropping to 735kg for the Ultra Hybrid.

Standard equipment highlights on the Lux include LED headlights, a 360-degree camera, dual-zone climate control, locking rear diff, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch infotainment screen, wireless smartphone mirroring, six-speaker sound, power-adjustable driver’s seat, faux leather upholstery and 18-inch alloys.

The Ultra grade adds a panoramic roof, 14.6-inch infotainment screen, heated/ventilated and massaging front seats with power adjustment for the passenger and memory function for the driver, actual leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, wireless smartphone charging, front differential lock and a 60:40-split tailgate.

Those wanting even more toys on top of sports car-poaching performance outputs can opt for the Ultra Hybrid, which adds a head-up display, heated steering wheel, 64-colour ambient lighting, 10-speaker Infinity sound system, power-adjustable, heated and ventilated rear seats, automatic park and reverse assist, parking sensors and a wireless charging pad in the rear.

All grades will be available in five colours – Marble White, Lunar Red, Onyx Silver, Storm Grey, Crystal Black – and equipped with a factory-fitted spray-in bedliner.
