The Finer Details

GWM today revealed the Ora 5 SUV at the Melbourne Motor Show, confirm pricing and specification for the small electric newcomer.

Sitting squarely in the small SUV segment, the Ora 5 SUV measures 4471mm long, which makes it substantially larger than the compact Ora hatch.

Inside, the Ora 5 SUV debuts GWM’s latest Coffee OS infotainment system, centred around a large 14.6-inch touchscreen and supported by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air updates and advanced voice control are all standard across the range.

Power comes from a front-mounted e-motor (150kW/260Nm) driving the front wheels. It draws energy from a 58.3kWh lithium iron phosphate or LFP battery supplied by SVOLT.

GWM claims up to 430km of driving range on the WLTC cycle, which will mean it covers around 370km on the more stringent WLTP cycle.

The GWM Ora 5 SUV represents a significant shift for GWM’s Ora sub-brand in Australia which has, until now, been represented locally by a single model, the Ora hatch, whose name has caused (and will continue to cause) no shortage of confusion.

The Ora 5 SUV not only adds clarity to the line-up, it brings meaningful increases in size, range and capability compared to the Ora hatch.

DC fast charging is supported at up to 120kW, enabling a 30 to 80 per cent recharge in approximately 20 minutes under optimal conditions according to GWM, while vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability allows up to 6kW of external power for camping or lifestyle use.

The Ora 5 SUV enters a rapidly expanding field of affordable Chinese electric SUVs.

The recently announced GAC Aion UT undercuts the GWM Ora 5 slightly, priced from $31,990 plus on-road costs, using a similar 150kW front motor and a 60kWh battery offering a claimed 430km WLTP range.

Meanwhile, the BYD Atto 2 matches the GAC on price, starting at $31,990 plus on-road costs, but uses a smaller 51.13kWh battery and delivers a shorter 345km WLTP driving range, despite competitive performance figures.

Against these rivals, the Ora 5 SUV positions itself in line on price as those competitors go up in price when government and dealer charges are added.

The Road Ahead

The Ora 5 SUV marks the beginning of a broader expansion of GWM’s Ora electric vehicle portfolio in Australia, with additional models planned through to 2027, along with several more GWM models coming in 2026.

Despite growing competition in the affordable EV space, the Ora 5 SUV may become a key model for GWM as it pushes towards its ‘Drive to Top 5’ sales ambition, while at same time keeping its CO2 fleet emissions in check.
