GWM teases super-ute concept

Chinese car-maker previews track-ready ute it’s calling the ‘supercar pick-up’ – full reveal later this week

It’s yet to be named and so far hasn’t been revealed beyond official sketches, but Chinese car-maker GWM says it’s building exactly what none of us asked for: a racetrack-ready super-ute.

Similar in concept to the SuperUte racer we’ve tested in the past, the concept ute is set to make its official debut at the Guangzhou motor show that starts on Friday (November 19).

And if these official renders are anything to go, the unnamed super-ute will feature a very low-slung, super wide and aggressively-styled body riding on huge wheels.

It’s not yet clear whether the race-ready ute is based on the brand’s current GWM Ute, or even the recently-revealed and even larger King Kong Cannon, which is also set to make its global debut at the Chinese show.

Initial details are scarce, but while the sketches appear to show a regular dual-cab body, the aggressive tray-backed concept could very well prove to be a space-cab, with only two front doors on show in the images and a tray that appears shorter than most.

Even still, it should make for a pretty menacing rig, with its bulky body kit, large air intakes up front, big brakes, sports bar, side skirts and quad exhaust outlets. Bright yellow styling cues also extend from the front grille to each brake calliper.

GWM is yet to provide any clue on what will power the new ute, which features a bulging bonnet that suggests big power outputs but could also act as a diversion if the super-ute was instead to adopt the zero-emissions powertrain to be employed by the upcoming electric version of the GWM Ute.

Stay tuned to learn more about the Great Wall brand’s eye-catching ute when the covers come off on Friday.
