Hardcore Pagani Huayra R to get naturally-aspirated V12

New tease of track-focused Huayra R could signal end of AMG-supplied powertrains

Pagani has teased a hardcore Huayra R and announced it will unveil its new flagship hypercar on November 12.

Confirming the upcoming Huayra R in a video promoting an annual design competition for the car industry, the Italian car-maker's owner, Horacio Pagani, revealed the Huayra R would feature a "new aspirated engine made especially for the purpose".

According to rumours, the wild Huayra R will be a track-only hypercar that will boast huge motorsport-inspired aerodynamic treatments that include a massive fixed rear wing, larger diffuser and wind elements normally associated with Le Mans racers.

Under the rear bootlid, reports suggest, will be a large-capacity naturally-aspirated V12 engine.

But given the Mercedes-AMG M297 7.3-litre V12 previously used has been pensioned off, Pagani might have sourced its new powertrain elsewhere.

There's no word where, but British engine-maker Cosworth – the V12 supplier to both the Aston Martin Valkyrie and the new Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 – could be at the top of the Italian car-maker's list.

That said, since the Huayra is unlikely to be ever road legal, Pagani might simply resurrect the old Mercedes-AMG-sourced Zonda engine after all, since it will not need to conform to emissions requirements.

As of the car itself, in the video all that is revealed of what could be the fastest Pagani ever is a 'Huayra R' inscription on one of its wheels.

When it arrives, expect the new Huayra to muster at least 745kW and weigh around 1100kg if it is to have a chance at competing against rivals like the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12, the Aston Martin Vulcan and McLaren Senna GTR.
