Haval Cool Dog launches in China with competitive pricing
It’s not confirmed for Australia yet, but GWM Haval now has another rugged and affordable compact SUV card to playThe 2022 Haval Cool Dog has launched in its native Chinese market from ¥123,800 – the equivalent of just $A25,769.
Conceived as a smaller alternative to the rugged Haval Dargo (Big Dog) mid-size SUV, the Haval Cool Dog is described by its creators as a compact SUV despite measuring 4520mm long, 1875mm wide and 1745mm tall.
Those dimensions very nearly push the Cool Dog into medium SUV territory, with the bigger Dargo only besting it by 100mm, 35mm and 35mm respectively.
There’s also only a 28mm difference in the wheelbase (2710mm v 2738mm).
Whereas the Dargo is widely considered as the more rugged and capable version of the Haval H6, the same could be said of the Cool Dog’s relationship with the front-wheel drive Haval Jolion which retails Down Under from $27,490 drive-away.
With this in mind, it’s unlikely the Cool Dog would retail for anything like $25,000 here if it was released in Australia, but a circa-$30K figure would almost certainly on the cards.
Besides the extra size, the extra cash over the Jolion also brings the Cool Dog’s standard all-wheel drive system, which is backed by up to five drive modes depending on the variant.
While it won’t threaten a Suzuki Jimny over properly rough terrain, the latest rugged Haval offers 196mm of ground clearance and approach and departure angles of 21 and 25 degrees respectively; easily making it one of the more credible small SUVs off the beaten path.
Speaking of the Jimny, Haval designers obviously looked long and hard at the Japanese icon when sketching the front fascia and then again when selecting a hero colour…
It’s worth noting, however, that unlike the Dargo, the Cool Dog isn’t fitted with locking centre and rear differentials.
Power and torque come courtesy of the same turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as the Jolion, albeit with the outputs bumped up to 135kW/275Nm.
Transmission duties, meanwhile, are handled by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, as per the rest of the internal combustion Haval SUV line-up.
carsales understands that while GWM Haval Australia is inching closer to confirming the Dargo for local release, the Cool Dog is also under consideration but nowhere near as far along given it was only revealed last month.
