The carsales network has removed onsite commenting functionality from our stories – across carsales and our non-auto sites.
Unlike many other publishers, we have always moderated our comments. The move now reflects the workload to do so across multiple channels.
The truth is our open commenting forum too often diverged off topic and sometimes even ventured towards the toxic. With some notable exceptions, even with active moderation, the value comments added was limited.
With our focus on helping car buyers and owners choose and use, it could be argued that the tone was not inclusive of our non-enthusiast audience.

Certainly, the number of direct emails from consumers asking questions suggests enough of our audience was uncomfortable engaging an open forum to make us reconsider the options.
The decision is also acknowledgement that many car shoppers and carsales readers are choosing mainstream social channels via which to ask questions, comment upon and share our content.
We believe the move to streamline our communication channels will encourage even more of you to provide feedback and comments on our content. It’s something we’ll be monitoring.
In future, when key content items are posted to our social feeds including Facebook, YouTube and Instagram, we’ll include links from our content onsite. Please take advantage of these.
Readers will also be able to contact our writers via our Journalists Page or eEmail us at editor@carsales.com.au
