If you’re looking for a seven-seat family SUV with a smidge more attitude for the school run – and the ability to get airborne over sand dunes on the weekend – the Hennessey Mammoth 1000 is for you.
Based on the already-bonkers RAM 1500 TRX super-ute and powered by a 755kW supercharged V8, the $500,000 limited-edition SUV is an ode to excess.
Only 20 of the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 monsters will be built – each priced at $US375,000 – by Texan tuner Hennessey, whose major claim to fame is the Venom F5 supercar that’s poised to slam down a record 500km/h top speed.
While the Mammoth 1000 is not about outright pace, it’s not slow either with enough gristle to see it dispatch the 0-60mph (96.6km/h) sprint in just 3.2 seconds.
Its significantly upgraded 6.2-litre blown V8 generates an earth-shaking 755kW and 1314Nm – big increases on the 522kW/868Nm outputs offered by the RAM 1500 TRX dual-cab pick-up, which itself is the world’s quickest ute.
Hennessey says the Mammoth 1000 will slam down an 11.4-second quarter-mile time at 120mph should owners decide to take it to the drag strip, but it also comes with luxurious front and middle-row captain’s chairs and a folding third-row bench seat.
The bespoke full-size SUV conversion adds significant body work to the RAM 1500 TRX, stretching the rear roofline and adding a new C-pillar above the tail-lights.
According to Hennessey, it features a “sizable rear-side window and adds a rear screen while retaining excellent luggage space behind the third row of seats”.
The rip-snorting off-road SUV also adds a unique front steel bull bar with integrated LED light bar.
As well as its unique exterior design, the hulking SUV also gets a serious chassis upgrade including a further 2.5-inch lift, 35-inch off-road tyres on unique 20-inch wheels and front suspension leveling system.
Hennessey backs the Mammoth 1000 with three-year, 36,000-mile warranty and company founder and CEO John Hennessey says the excessively powerful SUV is a project of both passion and pragmatism.
“I have a big family with five kids and have always enjoyed owing big, powerful SUVs. In 2012 we converted the first-generation Ford Raptor into our VelociRaptor SUV – I still own one today and love it.
“Now, we are excited to offer something very similar, but with a lot more horsepower, using the new RAM TRX truck as our base vehicle. Creating this king of SUVs offers our customers the ultimate combination of space, power and exclusivity,” said the Texan.
Hennessey also offers the 6x6 Mammoth ute, for those with a spare $680,000 lying around.
In the US, the Mammoth 1000 seven-sear can be ordered through authorised RAM dealerships. While it’s unlikely any of the 20 wild 4WDs will make it to Australia, the local order book is now open for its donor vehicle, the RAM 1500 TRX.
