Based on stats alone, the new SRT Viper is a brute of a car straight out of the box, but renowned US tweaker Hennessey Performance has still seen fit to turn out a pair of wild fettled versions – with the more extreme of the two kicking out a whopping 1120bhp (836kW). Starting with the entry-level (478kW/813Nm) SRT Viper as the basis, the Texas tuner has carried out a host of technical and cosmetic mods to yield the Venom 700R and the Venom 1000 Twin Turbo, with the numeric suffixes providing a rough pointer to their outputs in horsepower.
Hennessey hasn’t yet released pricing for either of the models, but expect it to be a fairy substantial outlay when you factor in the price of the donor car (the SRT Viper costs $97,395 in the US, while the GTS flagship retails for $120,395).
The Venom 700R’s upgrades include a revised intake system, reworked cylinder heads and exhaust system and a remapped ECU, boosting the 8.4-litre V10’s outputs to 541kW and 942Nm. These figures add up to claimed 0-60mph sprint (0-96km/h) of 3.1sec, a standing 400m time of 10.7sec at 216km/h and a top speed of 348km/h.
Importantly for owners’ peace of mind, the car is still covered by a three-year/36,000-mile (58,000km) warranty.
The Hennessey Venom 700R’s identity is spelt out by exterior badging, serial numbered dash and engine plaques and Hennessey floor mats.
Those seeking further personalisation can plump for options such as custom painted stripes, a carbon front splitter, rear spoiler and various other body addenda. There’s also the possibility of having five-point race harnesses, a rear diff cooler, adjustable coilover suspension, a fire extinguisher, and so forth.
However, if more speed is your thing, then you’ll be needing the Venom 1000 Twin Turbo, which ups the ante decisively by throwing a couple of turbos into the mix.
According to Hennessey, this engine will be rated at 1120bhp (836kW) and 1480Nm, enabling it to scoot to 60mph (96km/h) in a Bugatti Veyron-rivalling 2.7sec, while the standing 400m is dispatched in 9.7sec at 245km/h. (Its maker points out that these times were achieved using drag radial tyres on a prepped drag strip).
Almost all the engine’s standard internals have been replaced, and the Venom 1000 comes equipped with forged aluminium pistons (9.2:1 compression ratio), forged conrods, stainless steel headers, a remapped ECU and upgraded fuel injectors, fuel pump and lines.
It’s worth noting though that it only comes with a one-year/12,000-mile (19,000km) warranty.
As per the lesser Venom, a host of additional options can be specified to further boost it in the aero/handling/looks departments.
Could be a very handy package for Targa Tasmania assaults, or a devastating drag-strip demon…
