Combined sales of 4x4 and 4x2 variants of the Toyota HiLux have landed that model the crown of top selling new car in Australia last month.
Even outselling the enduringly popular Corolla, the HiLux sold 2206 units of the 4x4 variants and 1608 units of 4x4. Both figures represent substantial gains on the figures for April 2007 -- a 29.5 per cent upswing for the 4x4 and 24.2 for the 4x2 models. Combined, HiLux has improved on April 2007 sales by 27.1 per cent.
By leap-frogging Corolla, the HiLux pushed the Holden Commodore back to third place in the market -- can anyone recall even a single month when Commodore was the third-best seller in the market?
"April was a disappointing month for Commodore Sedan though Ute continues to maintain momentum," John Lindsay, National Manager Media Relations for Holden, announced in a press release.
"By way of comparison, YTD Sedan is up 10 per cent on the equivalent month in 2006 in the lead up to the release of VE," he added, but also implied that anniversary edition models due this month may have delayed Commdore purchases during April.
"With the 60th Anniversary packs coming in May, we expect to see Sedan sales pick up again with strong interest already being shown.
Lindsay made no comment concerning the Holden Sportwagon and the FG Falcon, both of which may have deterred buyers from purchasing Commodore during April.
There was no such rationalisation over at Toyota.
"Demand has been running hot for vehicles such as HiLux because of the mining boom and the easing of the drought in many places," said Tony Cramb, Toyota's manager of national sales.
"We have been short of stock, especially for turbo diesel models, but we were able to get additional supply last month."
In addition to the HiLux's purple patch, Toyota were also happy to note that the top four-selling SUVs in the land. Kluger (1268) outsold RAV4 (1191), followed by Prado (1157) and LandCruiser (1124). Subaru's Forester (1107) and the Ford Territory (1073) picked up fifth and sixth spots respectively.
