A mystery buyer has snared the largest collection of Peter Brock race cars in the world.
Queensland-based collector Peter Champion has confirmed he has parted ways with nearly 30 vehicles made famous by the nine-times Bathurst winner this week.
Purchased for an undisclosed amount, the sale included iconic cars such as the 1982 and 1983 VH Commodore that won at Mt Panorama, and Brock’s original 1969 Bathurst Monaro HT.
Speaking with motoring.com.au, Champion confirmed the only race car he didn’t sell from his extensive collection was the 2006 Daytona that tragically claimed Brock’s life during a rally event in Perth in 2006.
“I kept the Daytona. I just couldn’t do that to my mate and I wouldn’t do it to the family,” said Champion, who originally purchased the car out of fear the parts would be separated and potentially profiteered.
“The only reason I even repaired the Daytona was that the family asked if I’d buy it and put it in my collection – because Peter wanted it to come to the collection and they believed his spirit was still in the car.
“It will come back to my shed here and go back on the frame that it was re-built on.”
A long-time friend of the late, great motor racing icon, the Queensland collector established Champion’s Brock Experience in Yeppoon in 2007, running the business until 2013.
Champion put the collection of cars on the market in 2013, on the proviso that it be purchased in its entirety. It remained under Champion’s roof until it was relocated to Gold Coast theme park Dreamworld in 2015 in the hope it would be seen by more people.
Champion expressed mixed feelings about parting ways with the race car collection.
“I spent a lot of years collecting those cars and I had a lot of great moments with Brocky and the people involved in those days,” Champion said.
“Being a custodian of such a significant collection can be draining. For all the good remarks that you get, you also get a lot of negative ones too.
“I likened the collection to having older kids living with you at home. They still need a lot of attention even though they shouldn’t. It’s a massive cost to keep them whether you’re showing them to people or just letting them sit in the shed.”
The Daytona will go back into Champion’s possession, joining his extensive library of Brock memorabilia and a huge Brock road car collection. Champion will continue on as owner of the HDT road car division.
As for the mystery owner? Champion declined to comment.
“The new owner wishes to remain anonymous and will make announcements at their discretion,” he said.
