Holden Colorado pricing announced

All-new workhorse enters market with competitive pricing and monster towing capacity

Two months out from its long-awaited Australian launch Holden has announced pricing of the all-new Colorado ute.

The new high-riding Colorado will start from $26,990 for the DX 4x2 single cab variant with 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine and manual transmission, rising to $51,990 for the range-topping 2.8-litre diesel LTZ crew cab with automatic transmission.

Built in Thailand, the new ute will be available in three body styles – single cab, space cab and crew cab – across four equipment grades – DX, LX, LT and LTZ – in either 4x2 or 4x4 guise with cab chassis or tub tray.

Holden will no longer offer a petrol variant, due to the fact the four- and six-cylinder petrol engines currently available only account for around seven percent of Colorado sales.

Instead, buyers will have the choice of two new Duramax, DOHC, four-cylinder turbodiesel engines built at General-Motors’ new engine factory in Thailand.

When paired with the automatic transmission the new 2.8-litre turbodiesel produces 10 percent more power (132kW at 3800rpm) and 40 per cent more torque (470Nm at 2000rpm) than the outgoing 3.0-litre diesel engine. The 2.5-litre turbodiesel produces 110kW at 3800rpm and 350Nm achieved at a similarly low 2000rpm.

A five-speed manual transmission is standard or there’s a six-speed automatic transmission available as a $2000 option on all variants except the DX cab chassis.

The new Colorado will boast a class-leading 3.5-tonne towing capacity (with 2.8-litre engine) or three tonne towing capacity with 2.5-litre engine.

Featuring a more car-like interior design, the new Colorado will include modern must-haves such as Bluetooth connectivity, USB port and iPod-compatible audio system, two AUX power outlets and an AUX plug.

But even the top-spec Colorado will miss out on features available on some of its main rivals, including integrated sat nav, reversing camera and parking sensors.

However, a comprehensive array of standard safety features including electronic stability control, ABS, and four airbags should ensure it’s among the safest utes on the market.

The new Colorado is the product of a five-year, US$2 billion program developed across five continents including Australia, and more than 2.5 million kilometres of road testing.

According to Holden Executive Director Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, John Elsworth, the “Colorado will have a suspension tune that’s unique to Australia and most of the accessories range has been developed locally to specifically suit our conditions”.

The new Colorado is already on sale in Thailand and Brazil, but the Australian launch has been pushed back from early-2011 to around mid-year due to last year’s Thai flood disaster.

With local stocks of the current Colorado depleted Holden is extremely keen to see the arrival of the new ute. Sales of the outgoing Colorado have reduced to a trickle, with 2012 sales to the end of March down by more than 50 percent year-on-year.

Full details on the new Holden ute, including a full list of specifications and features, will be available around the expected launch date in June.

In the meantime look out for our first drive of the new Colorado in Thailand...
