Holden confirms OnStar connectivity for Oz

Australian models to adopt on-board safety tech from 2019

Holden has confirmed it will begin fitting Australian models with potentially-life saving OnStar technology from 2019.

Offering a full suite of connectivity and safety functions, including the ability to automatically call emergency services in the event of an accident (airbag deployment), the OnStar package will debut here on the Equinox SUV in 2019.

The technology has been available on General Motors vehicles in the United States since 1996. Based on other markets, it is expected the service will be offered to customers for between $20 and $40 a month in Australia.

So, what’s the fuss about?

Holden says equipped Australian vehicles will automatically connect with a Melbourne-based call centre in the event of an accident, an undertaking that creates about 30 new job opportunities. The call-up process will be automatically engaged within five seconds of an airbag deployment.

Once connected, the trained assistants will talk to vehicle occupants to ascertain the extent of their injuries, the whereabouts of the vehicle and any potential dangers. Where necessary, or if there is no response from occupants, the operator will dispatch emergency service vehicles to the scene.

The OnStar technology will aid in recovering stolen vehicles, or even hamper get-away attempts by disabling the vehicle’s accelerator and ignition. The suite also brings convenience functions including remote start and air-conditioner activation, tailored navigation assistance and vehicle diagnostics including ‘health checks’.

OnStar will utilise the Telstra network’s 4G LTE infrastructure thanks to a larger roof-mounted antenna that will also enable Wi-Fi hotspot from the vehicle and greater phone coverage.

The Australian roll-out will commence in 2019. It comes months after Holden lost Pandora connectivity across most of its Australian fleet.
